I've been thinking about and exploring the idea that we shape ourselves by our experiences. Phrases like... bent out of shape.... bitter and twisted... falling apart... flat... are in common usage. We depend on experiences as a vehicle to enable change and we can choose constantly how to reshape ourselves with current and "historic" events - the constant organic movement of us. I am interested in these ideas on an individual basis, collectively in communities, and globally. What we are individually as human beings is also reflected in the human race.
The black and white work explores the way I develop with my internal thinking to reshape myself. The works which refer to social shifts have orange included in them.
At the time of making this work there was in New Zealand a citizens' initiated referendum "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand", which led to my thinking how society develops and adjusts itself. As it does on an individual basis; sometimes by impactful events, by gradual awareness and also by a natural maturing of the collective psyche.
Should a Smack No.1-4
"Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?”. A citizen initiated referendum in New Zealand from 31 July to 21 August 2009. Against a background list of reported serious cases of violence and abuse towards babies and children (predominantly committed by a parent) in the month of August.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Sometimes the Question is more revealing than the answer ... or important. As a society what question could possibly be posed to protect babies and children from violence.
The global smack ... I wanted to include a plastic soldier in this work and was surprised to come across this pack without any reference to the word soldier, but instead "World Peacekeepers" including various and extensive weaponry.
